Anime Night Material

Huh

  • Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf
I binge-watched the first two seasons ages ago and don’t remember all that much about them, although I do recall enjoying them. From what I can tell, this is more of a reboot than a sequel to those seasons. Looking forward to this one, although it’s probably a bit too talky for anime night.

  • Bartender: Kami no Glass / BARTENDER Glass of God
Kinda hard to pin this one down. Not only is this an adaptation of a mid-late 2000’s manga, but it’s the second anime adaptation (the first one was in 2006). For a work with such a simple premise (a bartender makes really good drinks), it’s gotta have something to it, right?

  • Girls Band Cry
I understand if “full CGI anime” is an immediate turn off, but… man this kinda looks good. Hopefully it’s good enough to withstand the inevitable Bocchi the Rock comparisons.

  • Tonari no Youkai-san
Imma be honest, crow-man’s kinda freakin me out. Other than that, this looks like it could be cute.

  • Shinkalion: Change the World
CHANGE DA WORLD. MY FINAL MESSAGE. GOODBYE. Am I absolutely overestimating how good this will be due to Bravern’s influence? Yes. Yes I am.

  • Sentai Daishikkaku / GO! GO! Loser Ranger!
“Anti-hero Power Rangers” has the potential to either be dreadfully edgy or schlocky fun. Hard to tell which this’ll be from the trailer.

  • Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi / Mysterious Disappearances
I write these blurbs in order of what I watched, not top to bottom; this one was one of the last on the docket. Further down the page I will bemoan how Fairouz Ai (voice of Jolyne and Power) was only in shows that looked terrible. So imagine my relief when I saw her credited as the lead in Mysterious Disappearances! And this looks like a humdinger of a show.

  • Kaiju No.8
Gamers… so far this is the FIFTH anime this season that Fairouz Ai has been credited in. Unfortunately it’s only the 2nd anime that seems any good. Not sure why they went with having OneRepublic and, uh, Yungblud do their opening and ending themes though. Otherwise this looks like it slaps.

Ehhhh?

  • Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai / A Condition Called Love
High school romcoms aren’t really my jam, but for what it is this looks fine. The hidden “yandere” tag makes me think this is definitely not Snardle food.

  • WIND BREAKER
After Bucchigiri?!, any anime about high school delinquents beating the shit outta each other is gonna feel boring. I’m not holding out much hope that Wind Breaker will keep my attention, but I feel like giving it a chance at least.

  • Henjin no Salad Bowl / Salad Bowl of Eccentrics
Those who do not learn from Cop Craft are doomed to repeat it. Given that the trailer for Salad Bowl didn’t look like complete shit, maybe it did learn. It looks more fun at least.

  • Astro Note
Wacky alien romcom with a predominantly adult (I think?) cast sounds interesting, but it’ll need to be more com than rom for me to stick with it.

  • HIGHSPEED Étoile
I know I sung the praises of a full-CGI show above, but I feel like HIGHSPEED Étoile is actually pretty exemplary of a standard stiff and boring 3DCG anime. It’s a bad sign when the spinoff manga has better art than the anime itself. Not huge on racing shows personally, can’t really see myself watching more than an episode or two, if that.

  • Ooi! Tonbo
Without Birdie Wing’s commitment to batshittery, I don’t know how you make golf interesting. But hey, this is being animated by the Pon no Michi studio, so maybe only one episode will be about golf :^)

  • Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai / YATAGARASU
This is what happens when you unban Yata, Konami. I could be down for magical crow fighting shenanigans, and the trailer generally looked okay, but some of the action looked kinda… eh.

  • The Fable
Surreal comedy anime with yakuza antics sounds fun, but oh boy is this trailer rough.

  • Yozakura-san Chi no Daisakusen / Mission: Yozakura Family
The trailer’s colorful and energetic (discounting the funeral at the beginning) but it’s just not grabbing my attention. I think I’m just tired of shows about high schoolers. Give me spy milfs. Where are the spy milfs.

  • Jii-san Baa-san Wakagaeru / Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again
“What if your grandparents magically became middle aged again” is such a strange premise. Is it a good premise? That remains to be seen (but I’m leaning towards “no”).

  • Tensei Kizoku, Kantei Skill de Nariagaru / As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World
If I had a nickel for every fantasy anime starring a suspiciously young boy airing in Spring 2024, I’d have two nickels, etc., etc. This one looks less sus than 7th Prince at least.

  • Vampire Dormitory
Is it really BL if one of the boys is a crossdressing girl?

  • Blue Archive The Animation
I’m not a fan of gacha games and I wasn’t a huge fan of the Arknights anime adaptation either. This looks like less of a miserable slog than Arknights at least.

  • Tadaima, Okaeri / Welcome Back, I’m Home
I didn’t have “honest-to-God A/B/O male pregnancy anime” on my 2024 bingo card. I’m still in shock hearing Japanese characters talking about “alphas” and “omegas”. What the fuck. How did this happen. I’m losing my goddamn mind.

  • Rinkai!
This has a lot of the same problems that HIGHSPEED Étoile has unfortunately. Outside of the races, the art looks great and the animation looks fine, but the 3DCG races lack the energy that the hand-drawn stuff has.

  • Unnamed Memory
Do memories normally have names? Looks okay but not especially interesting.

  • Kenka Dokugaku / Viral Hit
Fuck’s sake, this is currently (as of the time of me writing this) the fourth show I’ve seen Fairouz Ai credited in.

  • THE NEW GATE
They should really stop making MMO anime not named Bofuri.

  • Jongtama Kan!! / Mahjong Soul Kan!!
Imagine an anime where girls play mahjong. What a goofy idea.
